Buying & Storage Guidelines

  • Appearance & Aroma: Deep, distinctive blue-green color with a slightly earthy, sometimes described as a “fishy” aroma.

  • Storage Tips: Store your spirulina powder in a sealed container in a cool, dark place to maintain its quality and potency.

Uses & Flavor Profile

Flavor Profile

Spirulina has a strong, unique, and sometimes pungent flavor that is often described as fish-like or earthy. It can be an “acquired taste.” For this reason, it is frequently consumed in capsules or mixed into strong-flavored preparations.

Suggested Uses

  • Culinary: Easily add spirulina powder directly into fruit and vegetable smoothies or mix it into soups and sauces for an instant nutritional boost.

What Else You Should Know About Spirulina

  • Microscopic Powerhouse: Spirulina is actually a microscopic aquatic plant (a type of cyanobacterium). While it grows natively in some warm, alkaline lakes, it is now commercially grown in controlled tanks.

  • Built to Last: Despite its tiny size, spirulina is remarkably resilient. It can tolerate severe conditions, including extreme salinity, often found in volcanic lakes.

  • The Name: The name Spirulina comes from the Latin word helix, referring to its distinctive spiral form.

  • Nutrient Density: This single-celled organism is packed with an impressive number of nutrients. It is one of the few plant sources of Vitamin B12, and a single teaspoon contains more B12 than liver! It is also a rich source of amino acids, antioxidants, calcium, and iron.

Astragalus

Introducing Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years, where it’s known as Huáng Qí, meaning “Yellow Leader” due to the root’s color and its powerful position among tonic herbs.

This revered herb is traditionally classified as an adaptogen, which is believed to help the body adapt to various physical, environmental, and emotional stressors, promoting overall vitality.

Key Traditional Uses and Benefits:

  • Immune System Support: Astragalus is perhaps best known for its traditional use in strengthening Wei Qi (the protective or defensive energy), supporting the body’s natural immune defenses, and helping to fortify the system. Note: In TCM, it’s often used as a tonic to build and strengthen the immune system, but typically not taken during an active infection like a cold or flu.
  • Vitality and Energy: As a Qi tonic, it is traditionally used to increase stamina and reduce general fatigue, helping to restore the body’s life energy.
  • Cardiovascular and Kidney Health: Historically, it has been used to support the health of the circulatory system, as well as the liver and kidneys.

Astragalus root is rich in active compounds like polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids, which contribute to its purported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is often prepared as a decoction (a slow-simmered tea), added to soups and broths, or taken in capsule or extract form.

Note: Astragalus may interact with immunosuppressant medications and could potentially worsen symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

Always consult with your healthcare provider before adding a new herbal supplement to your regimen.
